With our region already experiencing soaring temperatures this summer, a new campaign has been launched to help people stay well over the coming months.
NHS Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board (ICB) has joined forces with NHS Suffolk and North East Essex ICB to provide advice on how to treat common summer health problems, as well as making sure that holidaymakers know how to access local healthcare services.
Hot weather can cause significant heat-related harm, particularly for older people, those with long-term health conditions and others who are vulnerable.
A dedicated web page offering tips on topics such as how protect skin against sunburn, preventing dehydration and treating insect bites and stings has been created as part of the campaign.
The page also offers links to mental health support and an NHS directory, to help people access the appropriate service for them.
Dr Frankie Swords, Executive Medical Director NHS Norfolk and Waveney ICB and Interim Chief Medical Officer NHS Suffolk and North East Essex ICB, said: “I love the summer and it’s great when people can be outside enjoying the good weather, whether they’re on the beach, in a park or in their garden.
“I hope these useful tips will help people to carry on enjoying themselves all summer long.
“Planning ahead is sensible…keep some basic first aid supplies at home and consider taking them away with you as well. Antiseptic cream, plasters, insect bite relief, paracetamol and after-sun cream are all handy to have around, just in case.”
Local pharmacies can offer support and advice with many common ailments at this time of year, including bites and stings, cuts and grazes and stomach upsets.
Anyone feeling unwell and unsure where to go for help should contact NHS 111. They can help you get the care you need from the best place and can also help with urgent supplies of some emergency prescriptions.
