Do you feel being part of the LGBTQIA+ community affects your health care?
This was a key question we asked those attending both Norwich Pride, and King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Pride.
We received 164 responses, as well as 36 people who opted to give us more information about their experiences.
58 per cent felt being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community did affect their health care. Of those who left more detailed feedback, the majority shared a negative experience or view.
People felt there was a lack of understanding or consideration for someone’s sexuality or gender, and there was also frustration around the questions and procedures they were sometimes asked eg issues around pregnancy tests or contraception being offered when it was not relevant to them.
Based on the feedback we received, we feel there needs to be greater awareness and consideration for members of the LGBTQIA+ community when it comes to access to health care and their lived experience.
