Does being part of the LGBTQIA+ community affect your health care?

In July and August 2024, Healthwatch Norfolk attended Norwich Pride, and King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Pride, to engage with members of the LGBTQIA+ community about their experience of health care.

What did we find?

How many people felt being part of the LGBTQIA+ community affected their care?

Many of the respondents also felt there was a lack of understanding and consideration for a patient’s sexuality, and a frustration around some of the questions they were asked.

We recommended a greater awareness and consideration of the LGBTQIA+ community when it comes to both their access to health care and their lived experience.

As the number of people we spoke to was quite small, we hope to carry out further research on this issue alongside other key partners.

It is apparent that most people within the sample feel that not being part of the LGBTQIA+ community affects their health care, with almost 60 per cent of respondents believing that to be the case.
